What Is Chest Compression?

Chest compression uses garments or techniques to reduce the visible prominence of chest tissue, creating a flatter or more streamlined silhouette. Different approaches redistribute and support tissue in different ways and provide varying levels of compression.

There is no single approach that works for every body. Understanding the differences between garments, materials, designs, and techniques can help you find options that work for your body, goals, and everyday life.

More compression is not automatically better. The goal is to find an approach that gives you the outcome you want while still supporting your comfort and everyday life.

Chest Binders vs. Compression Tops

Chest binders and compression tops can look similar, but they may differ in compression, construction, flexibility, and how they feel in everyday use.

GREATER COMPRESSION

Chest Binders

Chest binders are designed to reduce the visible prominence of chest tissue and create a flatter or more streamlined silhouette.

  • Generally provide greater compression than compression tops.
  • May use specialized panels, fabrics, or construction to redistribute and contain chest tissue.
  • Can feel more structured or restrictive depending on the garment and compression level.
  • Often chosen when greater chest flattening is the goal.

MORE FLEXIBLE COMPRESSION

Compression Tops

Compression tops provide chest support and compression while generally allowing more flexibility and movement.

  • Generally provide lighter or more moderate compression.
  • Can support chest tissue and reduce movement while changing its visible profile.
  • Often prioritize comfort, flexibility, and movement.
  • May work well for everyday wear, physical activity, or when less compression is preferred.

Think spectrum, not categories.

The line between a compression top and a chest binder is not always clear. Both exist across a range of compression levels, materials, construction styles, and intended uses.

Neither option is inherently better.

The right choice depends on your body, the compression you want, your comfort and sensory needs, your activities, and how you plan to use your gear.

What Features Matter?

Chest compression garments can look similar while working very differently. The amount and location of compression, garment length, strap and back design, closures, materials, and construction can all influence how a garment fits, feels, moves, and performs.

There is no single combination of features that works best for every body. A feature that improves comfort or access for one person may be less useful for another. Understanding what each feature changes can help you compare options based on your body, goals, activities, comfort, and access needs.

  • What activities will you be doing?
  • Can you move and breathe comfortably?
  • Do your goals actually require greater compression?

Coverage is about more than appearance.

The best design is one that works comfortably with your body, clothing, activities, and everyday life—not just your wardrobe.

Back and strap design can affect comfort, mobility, pressure distribution, and how a compression garment feels throughout the day. Different designs may work better for different bodies, activities, and clothing styles.

  • Will the straps be visible under your clothing?

  • Are accessibility features important to you?
  • Does the closure change how the garment feels or compresses?
  • Will the design work with your mobility and dexterity needs?
  • Is the closure durable enough for regular use?

Accessibility is part of good design.

The best entry or closure system is one you can use comfortably, safely, and confidently—and that works with your body and access needs.

Construction & Materials

The materials and construction of a compression garment influence how it performs, feels, and holds up over time. Fabric, compression panels, seams, stretch, and reinforcement can all affect comfort, breathability, durability, and compression.

Consider:

  • What materials are used?
  • Is the garment breathable or moisture-wicking?
  • How and where is compression created?
  • Are reinforced or structured panels used?
  • How do the seams and stitching feel against your skin?
  • Will the materials work with your sensory needs and daily activities?

Similar-looking garments can feel very different.

Construction and materials affect much more than appearance. They can change how a garment compresses, stretches, breathes, moves with your body, and feels against your skin.

FIT & SIZING

Finding the Right Fit

A well-fitting compression garment should provide the level of compression you're looking for while still allowing you to breathe comfortably, move naturally, and participate in everyday activities.

More compression - or a smaller size - doesn't necessarily mean a better fit. The goal is to find a balance between compression, comfort, and function.

A Good Fit May Feel Like:

  • Snug and secure without pain
  • Comfortable, unrestricted breathing
  • Stays in place during normal activity
  • Comfortable movement through your shoulders and arms
  • The level of compression you want without excessive discomfort

Your Fit May Need Adjusting If You Notice:

  • Pain, numbness, or tingling
  • Difficulty breathing or taking a full breath
  • Significant rubbing, pinching, or chafing
  • Excessive rolling, bunching, or shifting
  • Compression that feels substantially tighter or looser than expected

Fit the garment to your body, not your body to the garment.

Always use the manufacturer's sizing guidance for the specific garment you're considering. Sizing is not standardized across brands or styles.

Understanding Measurements

Body measurements are one of the most useful tools for finding a chest compression garment that fits comfortably and performs as intended. While sizing methods vary between manufacturers, many use a combination of chest, ribcage, shoulder, and body measurements to determine fit.

Your measurements are generally a more useful starting point than your usual clothing size, which may not translate accurately between brands or compression garment styles.

Common Measurement Points. Shoulder Width: measured from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other. Full Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, usually across the nipples. Underbust: around the ribcage, just under the chest. Waist: measured from the most narrow part of the waist. Hips: around the fullest part of the hips. Torso-Length: measured from the top of the shoulder to the desired hem.

Don't size down to increase compression.

A smaller garment isn't automatically a more effective garment. Follow the manufacturer's sizing guidance and choose a size intended for your measurements.
