KNOW WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR?
Most people use clothing and other forms of personal expression to shape how they feel, function, and present themselves in the world. We choose clothes that reflect our personal style, wear makeup for a special occasion, select a bra that provides the support we want, or choose underwear that feels comfortable for a workout.
Gender-affirming gear follows the same basic principle. These are tools designed or used to help someone shape how their body looks, feels, or functions in ways that better align with their needs, preferences, or sense of self.
FUNCTION FIRST
It can be easy to think about gender-affirming gear in terms of what is “masculine” or “feminine.” But gender expression is far too varied to fit neatly into those categories.
Instead of starting with gender, we suggest starting with function: What do you want your gear to do?
When it comes to changing or shaping the body's contours, most gender-affirming gear uses one of two broad approaches: compression or enhancement.
COMPRESSION
Compression reduces, redistributes, or contains the body's contours.
Examples include: chest binders, compression tops, shapewear, gaffs, and some tucking garments.
ENHANCEMENT
Enhancement adds, shapes, supports, or emphasizes body contours.
Examples include: breast forms, padded garments, hip and buttock padding, packers, and gender-affirming body prosthetics.
Some people use compression. Some use enhancement. Some use both, or neither. What someone wants from their gear may also change depending on their body, clothing, activities, environment, or simply how they want to feel that day.
There is no “correct” combination. The goal is to find the tools that work for your body, your needs, and your way of expressing or embodying gender.
People use gender-affirming gear for many different reasons. It can support exploration, self-expression, comfort, movement, participation, and the ways someone chooses to experience or present their body in everyday life.
Gender expression is a fluid, dynamic experience that can change over time. Gender-affirming gear can provide opportunities to explore different ways of presenting, feeling, and experiencing your body.
Different bodies have different needs, and there is no single definition of the “best” gear. What works well for one person may not work for another. The right option is one that balances comfort, function, accessibility, appearance, and your own personal goals.
Gender-affirming gear can do more than change appearance. The right gear can support comfort, movement, and participation in the activities that make up everyday life—from getting dressed and going to work or school to exercising, socializing, and simply moving through the world.
What we wear can be one of the many ways we communicate who we are. Gender-affirming gear can help people shape their appearance or silhouette in ways that feel meaningful to them, creating more possibilities for how they choose to express and embody their gender.
